Frequently asked questions

Where is my data stored — is it really private?

Yes. Everything you add is stored only on your device (iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android phone or tablet), inside the app's own private storage. There's no server, no account and no sign-up — the people you add are just entries in your own Blue Book, not accounts. Kytra can't see your information, and we don't send it anywhere. The one thing to be aware of: if you have device backup turned on (iCloud Backup on iPhone and iPad, Time Machine on a Mac, or your Google account's backup on Android — which on Android keeps your written entries and settings, but not photos, audio or video), your device's normal backup may include a copy, the same as any other app on your phone — that's managed by Apple or Google and by you, not by us. See our Privacy Policy for the full detail.

Is my Blue Book encrypted?

Yes, by your device. iPhones, iPads and Android phones encrypt everything stored on them, and Blue Book keeps its files in space no other app can open. After your phone restarts, none of it can be read until you unlock it. On a Mac, the same protection comes from FileVault, which most Macs have turned on (you can check in System Settings, under Privacy & Security). On top of that, App lock asks for your face, fingerprint or a Blue Book PIN before your Blue Book opens, and a locked copy you leave with someone is encrypted by Blue Book itself, with a code only you and they have. The one exception is a Blue Book backup file: it isn't locked with a code yet, so keep it somewhere only you can get to.

What happens if I lose my device, or delete the app?

Your Blue Book lives on your device, so losing or wiping it means losing that data too — unless you've kept a copy. On iPhone and iPad, that can be your iCloud backup or a backup to your computer; on a Mac, your Time Machine backup. On Android, your Google account's backup keeps your written entries and settings, but not photos, audio or video. A Blue Book backup (see below) is the one copy that always has everything, so make one from time to time — especially after adding something important — and keep it somewhere safe, away from your device.

What's the difference between my Blue Book and my Essentials?

Your Blue Book is the keepsake: who you are, your wishes, your people and pets, your memories and keepsakes, and a page for each person you've left something for. It has no addresses, account numbers or paperwork, so it's one to hand down.

Your Essentials is the practical book: your personal details and identifiers, health, how to reach your people, your will, power of attorney and home, every account and policy with its numbers, your to-dos, who gets each keepsake, and copies of your documents. Keep it private, for the people who'll sort things out.

You fill in both as you go: in the menu, everything under Your Blue Book goes in the Blue Book, and everything under Your Essentials goes in Essentials. Your wishes are in both.

Can I get my data out of the app, so it's not trapped?

Yes. At any time, completely free (whether or not you've unlocked anything), you can back up your whole Blue Book — everything you've written, with your photos, audio and video, and any messages other people have left for you — as one file, in an open format any computer can read. Open the menu, choose Settings, then Back up your Blue Book. It's there so your information is always yours, even if you stop using the app. Blue Book on iPhone, iPad, Mac or Android can bring a backup back in, whichever device it was made on.

I'm moving between iPhone and Android — can I bring my Blue Book?

Yes, either way. On your old phone, open the menu, choose Settings, then Back up your Blue Book, and save the backup somewhere your new phone can reach — iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or an email to yourself. Then on the new phone, open Settings from the menu and choose Bring in a backup. Your entries, photos and recordings come across, along with any messages other people have left for you; your unlock doesn't, because purchases stay with the store they were made in.

Can I share things with my partner or family?

Yes. Each Blue Book belongs to one person, on their own device, so you each keep your own and choose what goes in it. For the things you both need — family, pets, a joint account, the house insurance — turn on Share with someone on each one. Then open the menu, choose Sharing, then Send shared items, and tick what goes in the file for that person.

Blue Book makes a locked file for you to send the usual way — Messages, AirDrop or email — and shows you a code to tell them separately, in person or on the phone. They open the file in their own Blue Book, type in the code, see what's coming, and add it. It goes straight from your device to theirs; nothing passes through us. Sharing things like this is free.

Helping someone fill in theirs — a parent, say? Choose For them on anything you've filled in for them, such as their home insurance. It comes out of your Blue Book once the file is made, and when they've added it, you remove it from your device.

A message you've written for someone can go the same way, with the video or voice recording you made for them. It arrives in their Blue Book under Messages, marked as left for them by you, so they can read, watch or listen to it there. It stays yours: it doesn't become part of their own Blue Book, and it isn't in anything they print or share. A message you've kept private is never sent this way. Films make the file large, so Blue Book tells you how big it is and lets you send the words on their own if you'd rather.

How does emergency access work?

You can give each person you trust their own emergency code. If they ever need to, they type it in on Blue Book's lock screen on your phone, and can then read your Blue Book and Essentials — but not change anything. It only works on your own unlocked device with Blue Book installed; it isn't a remote or online process, and we have no way to grant access on your behalf. When you give someone a code, you can print a card with their code and simple instructions to hand to them.

If you'd rather they didn't need your device, you can leave a locked copy of your Blue Book and Essentials with them instead: a file that only opens with the code on a card you print. They'll need the Blue Book app to open it.

Will Blue Book send me notifications?

Only if you ask it to. You can turn on a reminder for anything in Your Essentials that renews — two weeks before, and on the day — and you can choose a gentle check-in every 6 or 12 months, which only comes if you haven't opened Blue Book for that long. Blue Book asks for permission to send notifications only when you turn one of these on. If someone uses an emergency code on your phone and notifications are allowed, you'll be told straight away.

What's free, and what do I need to pay for?

Downloading Blue Book and filling it in — your people, memories, keepsakes, messages, accounts and documents, photos, audio and video — are free, and always will be. So are updating and sharing your Peace of Mind Summary, backing up your Blue Book, and sending shared things to someone close.

When you're ready, unlock it once for £9.99 — then print and share as often as you like, with no subscription, ever. Unlocking lets you print and share your Blue Book and your Essentials, with your documents, share messages with the people you wrote them for, leave a locked copy with someone you trust, and give people you trust emergency access. That's the UK price; the App Store and Google Play set the equivalent in other countries.

Is Your Blue Book a legal will?

No. Your Blue Book is a personal organiser, not a legal will, and unwitnessed notes carry no testamentary authority in the UK. If you need a will, please speak to a solicitor or use a proper will-writing service.

I've forgotten my Blue Book PIN

On the PIN screen, tap Forgot PIN?, type in the code from the PIN Recovery Card you kept when you set your PIN (dashes and capitals don't matter), and choose a new PIN. The card only works on the device it was made on.

If the card is lost too, we can't reset your PIN for you: there's no account, and we hold nothing that could open your Blue Book. Your Blue Book PIN is separate from your phone's own passcode, so that doesn't open it either.

Someone close to me has died. How do I get into their Blue Book?

We're so sorry. Blue Book keeps everything on the person's own device, so we can't open it or send you a copy: we don't hold any of it. What they may have left you:

  • An emergency code, often on a printed card. On their phone, open Blue Book, choose to use an emergency access code on its lock screen, and type the code in. You can then read their Blue Book and Essentials.
  • A locked copy: a file that opens in the Blue Book app on your own phone, tablet or Mac, with the code on the card that came with it.
  • Printed or shared copies of their Blue Book, Essentials or Peace of Mind Summary.

If they didn't turn on App lock, Blue Book opens on their unlocked phone like any other app.

I've got a new device — how do I get my unlock back?

Tap Restore a previous purchase on the unlock screen in the app while signed in to the same account you used to buy it — your Apple ID on iOS, or your Google account on Android — and the App Store or Google Play will restore your unlock at no extra charge. Purchases don't move between Apple and Google, though: an unlock bought on iPhone can't be restored on Android, or the other way round. Note that your actual Blue Book won't transfer automatically unless it was included in a device backup or you made a Blue Book backup beforehand.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple or Google, not by us. On iOS, request one at reportaproblem.apple.com or via Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases on your device. On Android, request one through Google Play — support.google.com/googleplay explains how, starting from your order history at play.google.com.

How do I delete my data?

Delete individual entries inside the app at any time, or delete the app itself to remove everything Blue Book has stored on your device (aside from anything already in a device backup or a Blue Book backup you've made).

Do you use my data for analytics or advertising?

No. There's no analytics, tracking or advertising software in Your Blue Book at all.
